CAYO HUESO Hauntings: “The Pirates of the Cemetery”

This one is actually not based on a true story like the others. With Key West being in the Caribbean, I decided to pay a little tribute to one of my favorite types of characters. That being swashbuckling pirates! I loved pirates growing up and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to include them in a comic. The pirate captain in the comic is Captain Nathanial Gore, who is actually from Disney’s Haunted Mansion. The comic also uses real locations in Key West like the Shipwreck Museum, East Martello Museum (where Robert the Doll lives), Sloppy Joe’s bar, and the iconic tourist spot of Key West, the Southernmost Point of the U.S. This comic is one of my favorites that I’ve done with it being so unlike the other Cayo Hueso comics that it’s jarring to see.

Later on, I really want to make “Cayo Hueso” into a Netflix horror anthology series of some sorts. There’s so much more to the ghost stories of Key West, some that I didn’t even get to touch on like the Lynching of Manuel Cabeza. In the end, this series does hold a special place in my heart and I really want to revisit it someday as an anthology series.
